American TV shows of course will air their Thanksgiving episodes when their Thanksgiving comes around but it still serves the same purpose. You have the the family sitting around a table, either saying some sort of prayer or what they're thankful for, or something like this scene from Smallville (it won't allow me to embed this clip) which I find kind of superficial. Not everyone can afford the fancy dinner and not everyone can make it home for the holiday. Heck some people may not even care for the holiday either.
Describing my situation I could travel back home for Thanksgiving but I usually choose not to because of
- The airfare
- Time spent with the parents is too short
- I usually get slammed with some sort of assignment/midterm that is due or occurs after the break
If I still have a meal ticket and access to the campus dining hall I'd be guaranteed a turkey dinner. Also for those living on campus there may be a charity turkey dinner for those who stay for break. If some friends decide to ask me out for supper I'd take the offer.
If there's no turkey why fret? It's a huge bird that takes a lot of work to prepare so why not go for something simple if you can't do the turkey? You could probably go for something smaller like chicken, or pork chop (if meat is not your thing you've pretty much go yourself covered with vegetarian dishes of some sort), or even a meal consisting of toast, jelly beans, pretzels and popcorn
(Snoopy is being a bit of a douche for keeping the turkey dinner to himself and Woodstock)
The important thing is to be thankful for what you have whether it's canned soup or the lavish supper and that you're still alive and kicking.
