Earth Hour: yay or nay?

Earth Hour, which I'm sure everyone has heard about, is this Saturday March 26 (annually since 2007/2008 on the last Saturday in March). Anyone who hasn't it's pretty much shut off the electricity/unplug electrical appliances that just suck electricity for one hour (specifically from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm local time) and it has to do with global warming/climate change awareness.

Ever since this happened I've usually involuntarily somewhat participated in this for two reasons: 1 I'm out somewhere at a location where it is necessary for the lights to be on during said event or 2 I have my lights off not realizing I'm participating in Earth Hour, might've had them off longer than the 1 hour too.

Should I or anyone else do it? I don't think there's a law saying that everyone has to do it so this is totally up to the individual. But hey, does turning off the electricity for an hour really do much? I don't think so in terms of how much is saved off the electric bill but instead of just participating in Earth Hour on the specific day, use common sense such as if it's not being used, like a TV for example, turn it off. When leaving a room (unless you somehow farm something that requires the lights on 24/7) turn the lights off. During the day have your windows open (unless your getting dressed or the sun somehow damages something in the room).

All and all, no one out there is punishing you if you choose not to partake but if you do it's a good time to spend some time alone to yourself or with family and friends telling ghost stories and whatnot.

the website has more info the event if you're interested (www.earthhour.org)

  1. We have never heard of the earth hour - now we have something to research and be prepared for in the year 2012. Thanks for the info.

  2. I am a nay, for one simple reason. What has begun as a symbolic hour now has people thinking it truly makes a difference. Like it is a sacrifice to unplug for an hour. The symbol has begun to mean more than what it is supposed to symbolize, which is awareness of energy conservation.
