- I'm actually learning things: as I mentioned in Advice for the young grasshopper starting university -- Spring/Summer semester and programs this is one of those summer programs offered by the university whereas my trip to Europe was mainly tourism
- accommodations: I am staying with the locals instead of various hotels. I mean I'm there to learn about Russian language and more or less some culture
- my group: The instructor from the university organizing the trip, 5 guys and me being the only female in the group. Back in 2006 there were 6 schools but each school had groups varying in size. My group that year was 2 people from the school organizing the trip (both female), 2 guys and I think 8 girls (which included me)
Anyways I'd consider this my second major trip to anywhere (I live in Canada so any trips south of the boarder I don't really consider big and I'm used to travelling to and from the provinces of Ontario and Newfoundland & Labrador). Since I'm going to be away for 4 weeks compared to the 10 days there is the question of "what to pack?" (this question applies to any trip).
I believe most airlines on economy class allow passengers 1 large luggage and up to a certain weight. Of course the idea is to pack light so when I return I have room to bring back anything I purchase. Also there is the weather to consider. I know for sure I will not be bringing winter clothing since the weather there in St. Petersburg is similar to what I experience in my hometown of Ottawa. Besides attire for the weather I may need attire for certain places and events (like religious institutions and possibly a night out). Also I would like to look less like a tourist as I don't want to attract pickpockets.
Beside packing clothes there are other things to pack such as toiletries. Pretty much the essentials (unless you're going to a hotel where they give free stuff) are shampoo, soap, toothbrush and paste, contact lens cleaner (if you have contact lenses), anything that keeps you fresh and clean. Depends on how much local currency you have it is possible all of these things should available there.
Anyways, I don't think the packing anxiety is eating at me too much (more or less my mom's suggestions on what to pack with me). What's eating at me is the big day is approaching fast and I hope everything goes well.
