Where was I ten years ago? I was at school, in gym class, out on the field playing soccer. An announcement came on but inaudible as the soccer field was not in reach of the speakers. The announcement turned out to be a prayer as planes crashed into the World Trade Center. I learned about it around lunch time since my friends were inside the school at the time and I believe a couple of them expressed fear of planes crashing here either into the school or somewhere in Ottawa almost every time a plane flew over (the airport is approximately 12 kilometres away from the school).
Not sure how many know about this but because airspace to the United States was closed Canada played host to some diverted planes. The airport in Gander had 38 planes, Halifax had 40, other airports that took in planes were Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and both airports in Montreal. More information can be found here.
Probably not a memorable thing but a year ago an idiotic preacher wanted to burn copies of the Koran but ended up cancelling the event. I haven't seen or heard anything recently about any crazy stunt as of now but hopefully people will show some respect for this day.
Anyway, put those conspiracy theories aside for just one day and remember those, stranger or not, who were there saving lives and helping others.
I haven't seen the movie for this (I want to if it show up on TV) but CBC made a TV movie based on what happened in Gander called Diverted and I think this song, according to my google searches, is in the movie
Edit (9/11/11) : I finally saw the film and the song that played at the end is this one. It's a much more fitting song:
I remember we had some of those planes (well 4 but it's an airport that calls people by name over the PA system to tell them they are late for a plane). My Nonna and a bunch from her church made sandwiches to take to the stranded passengers. To this day it makes me kinda smile. In the wake of a terrorist attack Nonna makes sandwiches to make it better. If she cannot cure it, she feeds it.
ReplyDeleteHome made sandwiches always make things better. Showing that one cares can make at least one person happy.
