So this month I graduate with my ESL teaching certificate. What do I do next? How about getting a job? But where do I find one?
Qualifications aside, I'll work anywhere. By anywhere I mean here in Canada or teach English overseas. When it comes to overseas I'm quite picky. My ideal places I want to work in are Russia, Turkey, or the Gulf. In that order. The places I want to avoid are Japan, Korea, and China. Why do I want to avoid the last three? Mainly out of disinterest and because I believe those places are popular.
But something tells me I shouldn't be picky about an overseas location. In the places I want to avoid I can get some job experience before going to the places I want to go. At the same time I want to do something that makes me happy. If I am unhappy at a job or place where I work it could lead to depression. Each area, places I want to go and places I want to avoid, have a 50/50 chance of me being happy. I mean I've been to Russia before and I have an interest in seeing Turkey but I have no idea if I'll end up being happy or not there. I have a disinterest in getting a job in Korea but if it boils down to me having to get a job there just to go on an adventure I'll apply for a job there and who knows, maybe I might fine something there to keep me happy.
So my credentials will be this:
BA Linguistics
Pronunciation teacher via a student experience program
TESL certificate from an accredited institution (will need accreditation status with TESL Ontarion)
Practicum sessions where I observed and led a class
and maybe add in learning some Russian, Arabic, and Turkish (being in the learner's shoes and observing teaching methods)
But some places may want things like
- BA in Education, BA in applied linguistics, MA applied linguistics with some ESL concentration, specialty in some other subject (if teaching something like high school math)
-CELTA (teaching in Europe), TEFL (specifically for overseas), TESOL (possibly interchangeable with TESL but it's a more recognized name)
-a CV instead of a resume or along with a resume (I haven't written any papers that are academic journal quality. Maybe some countries use CV over resume).
-x years of experience teaching (makes finding an entry level job not so easy)
And then there are things that scare me:
-Will need copy of passport and other official documents (Why not ask for a photocopy?)
-Will need photograph (not that scary, but someone who is blonde and looks "American" may be chosen over a Canadian who is of mixed background. Yet again one of my lung specialists I've visited to see if I have asthma or not marked me down as Caucasian under race.)
-tourist visa (sure you can get residency and work permits in the country, but I'm not taking my chances at ending up as an illegal worker).
At the same time I have connections. I've asked one of my former classmates for her experiences and then there's this guy I've met on the internet who has been doing overseas teaching for a couple of years (and I believe he started out in Korea). I may not be able to pick and choose where I want to work but at least I can count on them for advice.
Last posting I mentioned I'm taking on the NaNoWriMo challenge. So far I seem to be ahead of the game, as in typing more than 1667 words every day. One thing I experienced from this so far is if you haven't told people in your household in person that you're doing this challenge they will communicate with you. At the same time I'm not comfortable with telling this to my parents as from my perspective they will not understand or possibly want to know what I'm doing. I'd comment more on it but my brain needs a rest.

30 Day Blog Challenge: Days 29 & 30
Day 29 - Tell us about the most interesting person you have encountered at school or around campus.
I don't think there is a single person that can take this spot. I have met a lot of interesting people, a couple of them I have already mentioned in posts during this challenge (Latin instructor and the people who suggested to change my major). Then there are people I've encountered from joining up with the fencing club and the tall guy I had a wee bit of a crush on.
As for instructors there are a couple (technically 3) of them I can add to this list. There is one of my linguistics instructors who taught me historical linguistics and Old Church Slavonic. He recently just retired from teaching but he's a great guy to listen to and speak with. The second is my Russian instructor I had for 3 years. In a way I can describe him as Major Major from Catch 22 (not there when you need him, there when you don't) but he's a bit of an important guy with Canada-Russia relations which explains him being away most of the time. He has an unconventional way of grading people but again is an interesting guy to listen to when he recalls his stories of Russia and past students. The third is an instructor I had for a film course. The course he taught was a course on Russian Film after 1992 (and also keeps a blog on Russian film too though most of it caters to his students). Again a great person to talk with.
Day 30 - What are your favorite and least favorite things about college?
Time goes by so fast. That fills in both positions for favourite and least favourite things. Unlike high school which for me the semester still continued after winter break before the second semester, a semester at my university lasts about 14-16 weeks. It seems like plenty of time but once that date of that final paper approaches it's hard to believe that you made it this far (unless you decide to drop out and change paths).
And from now on no more blog challenges since I don't come here often.

30 Day Challenge: Day 28
Day 28 - Did any of your high school friends go to the same college as you? If not, do you still talk to your old high school friends?
In short, no. One person I knew almost did though as she planned on going to a different campus but instead went to a different university in Ontario. Just recently, back in March of 2011, I came across someone who went to my high school. I haven't seen her since then.
Do I still talk to them? Hardly. I mean most of them are on Facebook it's just either I have nothing to say to them or find it awkward to say hi. Maybe I should add that to a future post on "fear of rejection". I might run into someone when I return home but chances of me recognizing them and them recognizing are quite random in a big city.

30 Day Challenge: Day 27
Day 27 - Tell us about your worst experience from your college years.
I'd say my first two years. The first year is and can be rough as it involves some adjustment to new territory and faces. I sort of went in with a bit of optimism but after that year I became a little less optimistic about things. My second year was a bit more rough as it taught me that as much as chemistry can make pretty colours I just couldn't handle it. Day 7 explains pretty much why I switched out.
As for the personal stuff my first year was a bit rough due to my very first roommate. Because of that roommate I came up with the intro post to my first year guide. This roommate didn't last long (all of the fall semester and a bit of the winter) and I had a new roommate a week later. The old roommate and I didn't get along much. She wouldn't get earphones whenever she'd play music or a movie at 2 in the morning when I was trying to get some sleep. I was sick when I arrived and coughing like mad and it annoyed her. I couldn't help it, it's my body's way of fighting the sickness.
Besides the roommate problem the reason my first year was rough was being sick during the first few weeks of my first year. I tried to show enthusiasm at times but I just felt gross inside.
That's pretty much it.

30 Day Challenge: Day 26
Day 26 - What is something non-academic that you’ve learned at college?
Life skills. I guess I can say this is pretty much true for anyone who lives away from the parents. If you have them wake you up each morning reminding you you're going to be late, that's not gonna happen (unless they call you to make sure you get up. As much as they love you let them know you're an independent adult).
Laundry, if you haven't done it before, you learn how to do that (unless you save your laundry for your trips home. Save you from saving up coins for the machine but you need to know how to wash your clothes on your own, even if it means losing your favourite sweater from forgetting that you are doing laundry).
Cooking. Unless you are spoiled by dining hall or constantly visiting a fast food place nearly every day eventually you will find a way to make food, whether it's from the box or from scratch.
reasons why not to do things on an empty stomach. I have seen someone pass out from doing a combination of alcohol and weed and not eating beforehand. you have to make sure the person is still breathing and not choking on vomit.
that's all I have to offer for this post

30 Day Challenge: Day 25
Day 25 - Which did you enjoy more: high school or college?
In terms of class schedules: college. I mean how else can I sleep in until noon on some days? I'll admit that during my last year of high school I had 2 spare periods divided between my two semesters and technically got away with sleeping until noon a couple of times. I had no homeroom class so whenever the school had a liturgy service I had the option of not showing up.
Another thing I enjoy about college better than high school is I don't have any major projects due after the break. Sure high school semesters are longer but at the same time I got slapped with a project of some sort (which I most likely got little done during that time) as well as preparing for finals which came 3 weeks later.
As for social life . . . I won't mention here. Maybe I should post something about 'fear of rejection'.
Anyways I enjoy college more. Even though time is short I find there is more freedom for stuff.

30 Day Challenge: Day 24
Day 24 - Tell us about something interesting/funny that’s happened during class.
Recently, can't think of one, but this was years ago during my second year. This happened during an inorganic chem lecture and the speakers were making a nasty noise. The instructor thought at the moment by disconnecting the speakers the noise would go away. It did, only to set off an alarm.
Also April Fool's Day tends to bring up some things. One of my physical chem labs was on April the 1st and the lab instructor fooled us by saying that there's a bonus lab assignment for lab sessions that fall on that day. My Latin instructor fooled us by saying that Ancient Rome was something invented by the Medici's.
That's all I have to say on this topic.

30 Day Challenge: Day 22
Day 22 - Tell us about your least favorite professor.
(this 30 day challenge thing is a total failure, but I'll still complete the tasks anyway)
Least favourite professor . . . probably one of my chemistry instructors? Actually it's a tie between one of my chemistry instructors and a math instructor. The chemistry instructor was dry in terms of teaching material and the math instructor always carried a sarcastic tone in his voice whenever he spoke.

30 Day Challenge: Day 21 (and something on the older student)
Day 21 - Tell us about your favorite professor.
My all time favourite professor is my Latin teacher from when I took Latin. It was only the beginner courses I took but those were some fun times. The reason why I like him so much is for his humour. A lot of it has to do with either pop culture or old tv shows. Things that I remember from his lessons:
The imperfect tense of verbs: Remember B.A. is imperfect for his fear of flying. B.A. is a character from The A-Team (played by Mr. T.) and the character had a fear of flying (maybe heights too). If I wanted to say "I was praising" in Latin, that would be laudabam. Breaking the word down: lauda-ba-m where ba is an infix putting the verb in the imperfect.
the enclitic -que: fish chipsque (this coming from a vegan, and he's quite vocal about veganism).
He sometimes would tell stories too like the one about the Audi company name I mentioned here and maybe some anecdotal stuff too.
He also had an interesting accent. His family name is of Serbian origin (his first name, Milo, is short for Milorad to boot) but he identifies as German and even speaks it too. He did some schooling in England before coming to Canada. Okay he does have a German accent but he's not all Hans Gruber with it or Schwarzenegger with it.
Anyways something occurred to me today. Not sure sure if it's the weather or how I see people but something to watch out about the student older than average. Not all undergrads are well, young looking in appearance. I apparently mistook some who could easily be a faculty member or a grad student and not know that the person was a full time undergrad. fml? or it could've been anyone's mistake.

30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 20
Day 20 - What has been the toughest class you’ve taken so far? Are there any classes that you are not looking forward to?
Toughest class: it's between physical chemistry and calculus, yet one requires the other anyway.
Classes I don't look forward to: anything with multiple papers to write

30 day blog challenge: Day 19
Day 19 - What do you do during holiday breaks?
I don't go home during mid term break but I do go home during the winter and summer (mostly because I have to, living in a student residence). pretty much what I like to do is veg around and just surf the internet or play whatever games are on my computer (not many). Possibly the Facebook games.

30 Day blog challege: Day 18
Day 18 - Show us a picture of your favorite place to hang out around campus.
are 30 day challenges supposed to be consecutive? also to anyone who stumbles upon this, school life is now taking a lot out of me
anywho . . .
Yes, it may seem kinda geeky to hang out in the library study area. The lounge area of the library has much more comfy seats (and leather couches which people like to sleep on). The only downside is the wireless internet is extremely slow.

30 Day Challenge: Day 17
Day 17 - Are you paying for college yourself? If so, are you using loans and scholarships?
I have bad luck finding or obtaining a paid job nor will I ever have the brains for a scholarship (or even the special requirements for certain ones). I don't think I even qualify for the loan. You can pretty much guess my situation here.

30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 16
Day 16 - What are your favorite things to do, when you aren’t in class or studying? (sports games, parties, etc.?)
Internet stuff. Mostly play a facebook game or two, watch videos/listen to music on youtube or grooveshark. Lately I've been getting into fractal art. I am neither a math genius nor an expert. I just like to create fun images like this one:

30 Day Challenge: Day 15
Day 15 - Share about the first boy/girl you’ve had a crush on since being in college. Where did you first see them? Where did you first talk to them? Did you date?
Well, I did have a crush on a guy and it was the guy I mentioned here. Turns out that a couple of days ago N our mutual friend got the message of him now living in another part of the country so it's safe to assume that he's alive and well.
As mentioned in my story I met him during my second year. We mostly talked to each other during the fall semester as I would see him at fencing and at dining hall. The most time I talked with him was for an event for service learning day (which is basically a day for volunteering and reflecting on how one contributes to the community). The second semester usually was either through contact or msn or facebook as he decided to get off the meal plan and not return to fencing.
As for the dating aspect, no we did not. We went to a couple of events together such as our end of the year formals and his valentines day party (which I found something about him which wouldn't have made us a couple).
Thus ends the story of my one time guy crush.

30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 14
Day 14 - Which kinds of students are the most annoying to be in a class with?
I remember from one of my classes in the past (Beginner Latin 1) there was someone who would randomly comment on things which were kinda annoying so basically those trying to be a clown. But one class we were learning about the 4 group of verbs which included audire (to hear, listen). The imperative of it is audi and the person mentioned wanting the car. Fair enough the instructor brought about the story of how the company was name (the guy who started the company had the family name of Horch which Audi is the Latin translation).
The others would be the ones talking to each other and not paying attention. I don't mind if I'm far away from them but if I have to sit near them it's hard to pay attention to what's really going on. If class is boring the first day, either drop it or switch to another section if it's possible.
I guess anyone who answers every question the instructor asks in class. Once your turn is over give others a chance but if no one speaks up then you can go answer. Okay I am aware some are shy in the class, that is why give some time for others to answer.

30 Day Challenge: Day 13
Day 13 - Is there anything that you imagined would happen in college, but now that you’re in college you realize that you were totally wrong?
I guess early ideas of what university is comes from TV (and a bit from my aunt, who is about 12-13 years older than I am but I don't think she said much. Maybe she was as grouchy as me when it comes to young kids wanting my attention.)
Anyways I thought all universities had fraternities and sororities. Turns out that my university does not but there is a fraternity that opened up recently. But the on campus houses are somewhat like a fraternity/sorority in a way. Hazing no but some form of initiation took place hosted by the senior members of the house.
I guess that I could say I thought all classes were held in a lecture theatre of some sort but those are only for large classes. Speaking of class sizes the higher the level I went up the number of people in a classroom shrank, unless it's one of those courses that crossed over 2 departments in which the class size is fairly large.
Also what was new to me is the older students. No I am not talking about graduate students but adults who seem to have children that are my age (if they have children). I haven't seen many but I've seen some mostly in the night classes and a couple during the daytime classes. Yet again you hear about people as old as 95 getting a degree.
Anyway you learn something new everyday.

30 Day Challenge: Day 12
Day 12 - Which clubs and teams are you a member of? Do you remember how you got involved with these clubs?
I'm mostly involved with the fencing club. I found out about it during a clubs and societies fair during orientation (strangely enough I remember spilling orange soda onto their display that day). I think the thoughts going through my mind were "this is awesome I totally want to do this!" and when it came to me needing a parental signature to sign up for membership it was "I hope mom and dad allow me to do this." (I had to be 18 before I could sign the form and I was 17 when I started.)
Why was I worried? Back in grade 8 some rock wall climbing company visited my school and we got the opportunity to do rock wall climbing as a gym/P.E. activity. Dad wouldn't let me participate in fear of me getting some sort of spinal injury (which was clearly labelled as a warning on the form). I wanted to do rock wall climbing but my dad somewhat scared me away from it. (People were provided with helmets and I haven't heard of anyone who got injured during the time the rock wall was there. Totally missed out on my early teenage fun time moments.) Nowadays I'm not afraid to try rock wall climbing and don't need parental permission to do so, but it doesn't interest me as much as back then.
I've been doing fencing for 5 years now and I still need to work on point control and when to get aggressive.
Totally missed out on my early teenage fun time moments.) 30 day challenge: day 11
Day 11 - If your college has sports teams, which sport is the most respected? Have they ever won a championship?
What university doesn't? anyways the team is called Seahawks and I believe the university takes pride in its varsity teams which I believe are basketball, soccer, volleyball and wrestling. There may be more but I can't think of any at the moment. I honestly don't pay attention to sports teams. I think the most respected from my perspective is the basketball team. You have those guys/girls play games at events.
